Oakleigh Police members impounded two cars after both vehicles took off and accelerated quickly from traffic lights in Clayton overnight.

Officers were at the intersection of the North Road and Princes Highway around 11.55pm yesterday.

They observed a Mercedes C200 station wagon and the Porsche 911 convertible speed off from the lights and head east along Wellington Road.

The cars raced side by side allegedly reaching speeds in excess of 140km/h in the 80 km/h zone.

Both vehicles were intercepted shortly afterwards.

A 33-year-old Ferntree Gully man will be missing his Mercedes and is expected to be charged with speeding.

A 52-year-old Brighton man will be pining for his Porsche and is also expected to be charged with speeding at a later date.
