It is with great sadness I can confirm one of our police officers has died in Melbourne today (Saturday, 4 November 2017) as a result of a gunshot wound.

The male officer was found by colleagues in the AFP’s Melbourne Headquarters in La Trobe Street about 9am this morning.

The circumstances around this tragic incident are being investigated by Victoria Police, who will prepare a report for the coroner. Our colleague’s death is not believed to be suspicious.

My thoughts are with his loved ones and the broader AFP family. I will be joining Deputy Commissioner Mike Phelan, Assistant Commissioner Frank Prendergast, our Management Team in Melbourne, and our Welfare Officers to provide whatever support we can for the officer’s family and our colleagues.

It is not possible to put into words the grief and acute impact today’s loss will have on all within our close knit AFP family.

Out of respect for the family, friends, and the coronial process, we will not be providing any further comments.
